|Event description=Across East Africa, the majority of schools supported by the World Food Programme (WFP) still rely on traditional three-stone fires for meal preparation, contributing to deforestation, habitat loss, and indoor air pollution. The inefficient use of firewood not only strains already fragile ecosystems but also places a heavy burden on communities, particularly women and children, who often collect the fuel. In some cases, the scarcity of firewood results in undercooked meals—or no meals at all—directly impacting students' nutrition and well-being. Transitioning to cleaner, more efficient cooking technologies is essential for reducing environmental degradation, improving health outcomes, and ensuring that school feeding programs remain sustainable in the long term, aligned with national climate policy and investment planning.

This webinar brings together topic experts to discuss the critical links between clean cooking, ecosystem restoration, and climate change mitigation and adaptation, focusing on the challenges and opportunities in the East and Horn of Africa. A panel of experts will discuss the research and data needed to shape policy and investment, how to monetise climate and non-climate co-benefits of non-biomass cooking technologies, and the partnerships required to drive widespread adoption of sustainable solutions. By bringing together diverse perspectives, the session aims to identify actionable next steps that support a shift toward fuel-efficient school cooking and regenerative landscape practices, ultimately enhancing food security, biodiversity, and community resilience.

The webinar is organised in collaboration with the World Food Programme (WFP).
