|PAP Description=Milk production provides many farmers in developing countries with a vital source of food and income. However, raw milk is a very perishable foodstuff and hence its quality deteriorates considerably without further treatment by chilling or heating. A cooling system enables the milk to be transported to markets, where better quality gives access to price premiums.

In order to give farmers access to off-grid cooling systems, the University of Hohenheim developed the Solar Milk Cooling technology, which was piloted in Kenya, Tunisia and Colombia in combination with technical trainings. The system comprises of a milk can with an isolation blanket and a small solar-powered ice maker. The ice from the ice maker is used to cool down the milk in the can overnight which can then be sold the next day.

The cooling technology has been tested reliable: the system has a stable PV power to ice-making performance ratio, it has minimal wear and tear components, and it is hardly depending on batteries.
