Overview

Tanzania has abundant but largely untapped renewable energy resources, including biomass, water resources for hydropower, wind as well as plentiful of sunlight.[1] At the same time, the country is not doing well when it comes to generating electricity. The rates of electricity supply in rural areas are low – only 2% of the rural population has access to electricity and the figure for the entire country is about 15%.[1]

Challenges & Issues

Biomass

Challenges/ issues affecting the exploitation of biomass technologies in Tanzania include[2]:

  • Limited technical know how.
  • High initial and investment costs of some biomass technologies.
  • Limited awareness and exposure to the existence and potentials of the technology of Tanzanians.
  • Lack of financial facilities for energy investments.
  • Lack of consideration and capability to calculate life cycle costs of different energy options for Tanzanians.
