Sustainable provision of rural renewable energy with focus on financially viable solutions in developing countries International DAAD-Alumni Summer School - November 4 - 14, 2013 Institute for Agricultural Engineering, University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Germany This Summer School gives us the opportunity to get together students, visiting scientists of German universities or former employees of German companies coming from developing countries to exchange
knowledge and experience about current issues of rural energy provision in the participating countries.

The Program includes a significant part of proactive involvement of the participants in the development of autonomous energy scenario solutions besides speeches of professors and scientific staff of our Institute of Agricultural Engineering and presentations of external experts. The required knowledge is provided in theory and practice. Especially excursions and poster presentations of the participants provide a broad knowledge base to work with. The results of the Summer School consist of concrete energy concepts for rural “energy villages” and will be presented at the Agritechnica Trade Fair. A social and cultural program provides additional space for networking and discussions about future research cooperation. The final highlight is the visit of the world’s largest agricultural trade show “Agritechnica 2013” in Hannover.

The programme is organised and hosted by the Center for Agriculture in the Tropics and Subtropics of the University of Hohenheim with financial support of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

The summer school is targeting German university alumni from developing countries (according to DAC-list) who are working in research, academic or educational institutions, NGOs, the public sector, development organisations or private enterprises and who are professionally involved in the fields of resource use and management (esp. water), land use planning and food security.

The main topics of the summer school are:

• Natural resource use, food security and poverty alleviation
• Water resource management
• Interdependencies of water, food and energy in the light of demographic developments
• Crop production within the water cycle
• Land use planning and modelling
• Watershed management
• Use of waste water
• Resource efficient agricultural production
