The Evolution of the State of the Off-Grid Appliance Market Reports

The State of the Off-Grid Appliance Market reports, published in 2016, 2019, and most recently, in 2024, track and assess the Low Energy Inclusive Appliance (LEIA) programme’s progress towards its ambitious goal: to double the efficiency and halve the cost of high-performing and weak-grid appliances.

The first iteration in 2017 provided a crucial snapshot of the global off-grid appliance market across three key technologies: televisions, refrigerators, and fans. It marked the beginning of a systematic exploration of market scale, trends, and barriers.

The second report in 2019 expanded the appliance scope to include solar water pumps and built on the previous report’s findings with data and research from the Efficiency for Access Coalition, market stakeholders, and insights from country profiles. The report also outlined predictions on how these technologies could reach scale.
