Introduction

Renewable energy (RE) is an important element in a diversified and sustainable energy mix. It increases energy security and contributes to the mitigation of climate change by reducing CO2 emissions. The ASEAN region has huge potentials for the use of RE and member states are increasingly focusing it in order to reduce the dependence on fossil fuels and to ensure more sustainable and environmental friendly power supply. The ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) underlines this fact and outlines the ambitious target to expand the use of RE in the ASEAN power generation to 15% by 2015. [1]

Creating Renewable Energy Market in ASEAN

In recent years, the ASEAN Member States (AMS) made considerable effort to tap the vast RE resources in the region in order to attain this objective. Several countries introduced feed-in-tariff (FIT) for RE, namely: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, and Thailand, as well as other supportive policies (e.g. tax and customs exemptions, tax holidays, etc). In order to promote a large-scale and region-wide RE deployment local capabilities and expertise shall be utilised as much as possible. Regional and local private sectors, ranging from RE component: suppliers, consultants, and firms play a crucial role in RE market development. As part of transparent market information, access to company profiles and information about offered service and technologies is key to attract increased investment in the regional RE sector.[1]
