Project description

Sesame is one of the Burkina Faso’s largest commodities. Most of sesame grains are being exported, since only a few sesame oil processing units exist due to lack of infrastructure and high energy cost in the country. The aim of this project was to study the technical and economic viability of a solar-powered sesame oil production system at cooperative level.

The University of Hohenheim developed the solar-powered sesame oil press, which was piloted in Burkina Faso. While the innovation showed promise for exports of sesame oil to the European Union, it also raised the needs for technology improvements concerning moisture content of the sesame grains and oil quality preservation.
