In 2019, only 30% of the total population of Mozambique had electricity access while 5% had access to clean cooking fuels and technologies[1]. However, Mozambique has a huge RE potential i.e. 23,000 GW of solar energy[2], 12,000 MW of hydro energy[3], 4.5 GW of wind potential and 2 GW of biomass energy[4]. Thus, off-grid renewable solutions have the potential to bridge the energy access gap and achieve country-wide electrification and access to clean cooking.  

Against this background, energypedia organized a series of webinars on selected RE technologies (solar home systems, improved cookstoves, mini/nano grid and solar powered irrigation). The topics discussed in each webinar were based on demand and interest from the Mozambican energy sector. The aim of this webinar series is twofold: to promote knowledge creation and sharing on the mentioned RE technologies, and to highlight the experiences (both success and failure case stories and learnings) from the sector to prevent duplication and inventing of the wheel. The case studies featured during the webinars can be found in the corresponding sub-portals in the “Mozambique Off-grid Knowledge Hub”.

Taira Pene, Fundação para o Desenvolvimento da Comunidade – FDC

Taira Pene is a renewable energy manager and engineer and manager, with close to 5 years of experience in the energy sector and disaster risk management for the Mozambican context. Since 2020, Taira collaborates with the Foundation for Community Development (FDC) in the management of the Results Based Fund (RBF) called the Sustainable Access to Renewable Energy Fund - FASER, which results from a partnership between Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and FDC. In 2021, through the partnership between FDC and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), Taira joined the design team for the disaster risk management strategy for FDC. In both FASER and FDC's disaster risk management strategy, Taira acts as the focal point for renewable energy and environmentally sustainable development. Before joining FDC, she joined the Energy Department of the Gaza Provincial Directorate of Mineral Resources and Energy where she took her first steps in the energy sector.

Florência Saide, Sogepal

Florência Saide, Founding Partner of SOGEPAL, is currently Director of Projects and Human Resources of one of the main companies for the production and commercialization of improved stoves in the southern region of Mozambique. She has an accumulated professional experience in the renewable energy sector of about 9 years, having participated in the research and implementation of activities for the dissemination and commercialization of improved cookstoves in the local market. She started her career in 2011, in SOGEPAL in the Department of Human Resources and Public Relations, accumulating 6 years of experience. Between 2013 and 2015, she was part of the leadership of the Marketing activities in the dissemination of the use of improved stoves in communities in Maputo province, in the EnDev project led by SNV - Dutch Organization for Development, making an added experience of 2 years in the area of Marketing. She is also a Founding Partner (2014) of UNIMETAL, a subsidiary of SOGEPAL, which operates in various sectors of activities in the manufacture of products that have metal as raw material, including the production of improved cookstoves, cookware, and other small metal derivatives.

Norato Xerinda, MozCarbon

Norato Xerinda has been working for more than 10 years on carbon projects in clean cooking and forestry. He is currently the Monitoring and Certification Manager at Mozambique Carbon Initiatives LDA (MozCarbon). He leads the project monitoring, audit and certification processes for cookstove projects in Mozambique and correspondent generation of carbon credits. He was responsible for the introduction of the cookstove component into MozCarbon’s business portfolio and for the first issuance of carbon credits for MozCarbon by the Gold Standard certification body. He has performed various roles in cookstove project development including partnerships, fundraising, sales management, stove testing among others. His expertise includes Project Management, Monitoring and Evaluation of Energy Projects and Programs, Carbon Assets Development (with focus on cookstoves) and Forestry. Currently he is a Doctoral Candidate in Social Sustainability and Development at Universidade Aberta, Portugal. He also holds a Postgraduate Degree in Rural Development and a BSc degree in Forestry from the Eduardo Mondlane University in Mozambique.

Aldina Sindique, Carbonsink

Aldina Sindique is Climate Change Expert working for Carbonsink since 2018. She is the Country Representative responsible for identifying new opportunities, and market segments of carbon projects in the country. Before joining Carbonsink, she has worked for IIAM (Mozambique Agrarian Research Institute) in research activities and socio-economic aspects linking farmers to market; and for APIEX (Agência de Promoção de Investimentos e Exportações) in the analyses of domestic and foreign investment projects. She has substantial experience in Forest Management, Sustainable Agriculture and Energy Efficiency. She holds a MSc in Natural Resources Management for Tropical Rural Development (Land and Water) and Bachelor’s in Forestry Technology.

Celio Jose Barnete, Pamoja

Operations and Financial Manager Celio Barnete is a native of Nampula, graduated in Law from UMBB in Nampula. Currently attending a Master in Renewable Energies. He has experience in capacity building and team management. Celio manages the daily operations of the business and reports on business performance, customer payments and satisfaction. During his 4 years with Pamoja, Celio became a key player in building the local expertise needed to scale the operations.

Webinar Part 3: Lessons Learned: Solar Powered Irrigation Systems for Smallholders in Gaza, Mozambique

In March 15th -17th, PRACTICA presented the lessons learned from the project in a high-level workshop in Maputo, Mozambique. The workshop sparked interesting discussions around solar irrigation for smallholders in Mozambique between stakeholders from different sectors, such as NGOs, government, academia and the private sector.

In this webinar, PRACTICA will introduce their project: “Developing the Solar Irrigation Business case in Gaza Province”, and the findings from working with SPIS for smallholders in Gaza. Practica is a non-profit organisation with the mission to strengthen skills and improve access to technologies in the WASH sector in Africa and Asia.

Aldo Zamarroni

Aldo has a BSc in irrigation and an MSc in International Land and Water Management, specializing in water, society, and technology. He joined PRACTICA in 2021 to technically support different portfolios in the organization, including irrigation. He coordinates two solar irrigation projects in Mozambique and is involved in technical assistance, capacity building, and capitalization activities in Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. Aldo pretends to share the lessons learned from the successes and failures in Gaza province to support and strengthen the efforts other organizations are currently implementing in Mozambique.

Zunchany Matola

Matola has a background in hydrogeology. He works for PRACTICA on the project “Developing Solar Irrigation Business Case in Gaza Province, Mozambique” since 2022. Coordinating the local implementation of activities regarding manual drilling, M&E, and technical assistance regarding the project. He is also passionate about projects related to the water, agrifood, and renewable energy sectors in Mozambique and is committed to providing low-cost and sustainable technologies to those most in need.

Helena Macune

Helena Absalão Macune Conwana, has over 5 years of experience in the energy sector and is a final year student of the Master in Science and Technology of Renewable Energy at the Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) and a graduate in Applied Physics with a specialization in Renewable Energy. Helena is currently the Communications, Internal and External Relations Officer at the Mozambican Renewable Energy Association (AMER), where she assists in attracting associate members, partners and in promoting the effective participation of women in the country's renewable energy sector.

In addition to being a mentor for women, she participated in mapping projects in the communities of Murrapaniwa and Marrere in the city of Nampula, which aimed to identify families without access to energy from the grid, for a subsequent follow-up in the process of acquisition of solar kits from the Energy Fund - FUNAE. She did community workshops, to train communities in the operation of solar home systems. Helena, provided a professional internship at Energias de Portugal (EDP) in Portugal-Lisbon, specifically in the department of Access to Energy (A2E), where she was trained in: simulating domestic systems according to customer survey, document analysis of project financing processes for non-governmental organizations, as well as the development of installation guide and production of videos of solar photovoltaic systems.

Berry van den Pol

Berry van den Pol is a farmer-led irrigation specialist who started working with Mozambican farmers about ten years ago. He joined Practica Foundation in 2013 as a project engineer responsable for testing the technical and socio-economic fit of solar irrigation technologies. Berry aims to share lessons learnt and increase sustainable access to technologies. In 2021, Berry realised a market study on solar irrigation pumps in Mozambique funded GIZ, which he will present during the webinar..

Marion Cuisin

Marion studied Agronomy and Rural Development. After her studies she joined the irrigation team of Practica, and now provides technical assistance to several projects in East and West Africa. She helps local partner organisations with the technical design and planning of small-scale irrigation systems (SPIS), monitoring and evaluation, and the access to markets of irrigation technologies. In 2021, Marion designed and prepared trainings on SPIS for technicians, end-users and teachers in Ethiopia and Ghana. With a strong understanding of both farming systems and communication, Marion has developed a range of tools to provide practical and accesible information to farmers and technicians on solar powered irrigation, including decision-making guides, a serious game, and many training exercises. Familiar with the challenges related to the design of SPIS, she will present the technical considerations to take into account for planning SPIS based on the potential of SPIS in Mozambique, presented by her colleague, Berry van den Pol.

Ranisha Basnet

Ranisha has more than 6 years of experience in the renewable energy sector focusing mainly on developing countries. Her expertise lies in energy research, project management and developing knowledge products (webinars, database and knowledge portals). She has also worked as an energy consultant for different international organizations.
