Positive economic impacts of rural electrification programs in developing countries are mainly due to the productive or income-generating use of electricity. In rural Bangladesh, stand-alone Solar Home Systems (SHS) have been widely applied for rural electrification purposes. However, apart from notable positive social benefits, economic impacts have proven to be rather limited, mainly due to widespread lack of productive uses of the SHS technology. A recent study aimed at identifying the potentials and barriers for productive uses of SHS as well as other PV applications in rural Bangladesh.
