Objective (DC Program): The modernization of the renewable energy sector contributes to sustainable economic development, improving the quality of life of the population and achieving Kenya's climate targets.

Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa (CoMMSA)

OBJECTIVE:Support the external dimension of the European Green Deal, as the global challenges of climate change and environmental degradation require a global response. GIZ is supporting counties in the implementation of the pillars within the MoU with Ministry of Devolution and ASALs.
2019 - 2023

  • Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plans - Implementation of Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plans (SEACAPs) – Nakuru, Mombasa, Makueni.
  • Climate and Energy Infrastructure - Support to urban climate and energy infrastructure projects - prioritized sectors of waste management/small scale waste to energy, wastewater treatment and climate adaptation.
  • Knowledge exchange and regional cooperation - facilitates peer-to-peer exchange and partnerships to exchange experiences, and replicate best practices.

Connective Cities (CC)

OBJECTIVE: promote sharing of experience among cities and practitioners worldwide, support cooperation between German and international cities, initiate joint projects and disseminate proven solutions and concepts. 2019 - 2022

  • Exchange - Promote exchange of municipal expertise and mediates between supply of and demand of practical experience by mobilizing urban practitioners to share their knowledge.
  • Networking - Build a network that will provide systematic access to practice-oriented solutions for sustainable urban development.
  • Governance - comprise of individuals and institutions from local administration, government, civil society, science and business sector.

Green Cooling Initiative (GCI)

OBJECTIVE: Integrate the immense mitigation potential of the RAC&F sector into the global climate and energy discussion and thereby initiate technology and policy transformation in Kenya
2018 - 2021

  • Sector Strategies - develops sector strategies (incl. GHG inventories, mitigation scenarios, technical roadmaps and policy recommendations) fostering green cooling technologies and showcasing impacts of pilot projects e.g. Mfangano Island - fish cold storage facility.
  • Trainings and certifications - Supporting development and implementation of trainings and certification schemes.
  • Financial Analysis - Conduct financial analyses and support obtaining funds from international climate finance sources.
  • Networking - Expand the Green Cooling Network providing cooperation between all RAC&F stakeholders worldwide and spread information concerning green cooling technologies.
