|Pub Abstract=The report explores how access to reliable energy in schools can unlock educational opportunities, particularly for girls. At a time when 272 million children remain out of school globally—and nearly half of them are girls—the consequences are profound. Without stronger support, the gender gap in access to education and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) opportunities will persist. Ensuring stable electricity in schools is critical to achieving commitments to SDG4 (Quality Education), SDG5 (Gender Equality), and SDG7 (Affordable and Clean Energy). Practical implementation requires not only infrastructure expansion but also gender-responsive policies, financing and community engagement that ensure every child, especially every girl, can learn in an electrified, safe and inspiring environment.
 
 
These goals, known as the 2030 Agenda, outline targeted action towards global development, including reducing poverty, addressing inequities, and responding to the challenges of climate change. A key SDG is SDG 7, which concerns sustainable energy access. Currently, an estimated 666 million people lack access to electricity, the majority living in Sub-Saharan Africa, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA 2024).
 
 
 
Despite incremental progress towards electrification, UN Women estimates that by 2030, 341 million women and girls will remain without electricity (UN Women 2023). In consideration of the 272 million children and youth not currently in education (UNESCO 2025; UIS 2025), the pressing challenges of both electrification and education access require a deeper understanding.
