Flat Bed Paddy Rice Dryer | ☑ Energy Efficiency ☐ Renewable Energy ☐ Alternative Methodology |
Description | Rice paddy drying methods make a large positive economic impact on a community. Improper drying leads to spoilage and quality issues with significant economic losses. Additionally, post harvest spoilages are energy and resources losses. Mechanized drying approaches offer a variety of advantages over passive solar drying including less labor, drying uniformity, and volume drying proximal to harvest regardless of ambient conditions. Differing versions of the Paddy Rice Dryers exist. Some feature semi-automated hull feeders but most rely upon manual feeding of rice hull heating fuel. Use of small internal combustion engine for blower operation might be replaced with electric motor powered by renewable energy. Fossile fuels can be replaced by renewable sources.

Economics | Proper cereal drying is economically significant since spoilage currently accounts for up to 50% of economic losses for rice production in developing countries. Flat Bed Paddy Rice Dryer are likely too expensive to own, operate and maintain for most small farm operations and therefore are more suited to community ownership.
Technology Development Level | Well established regional use: Thousands of similar Flat Bed Paddy Rice Dryer are in use. The design vastly improves the drying process of cereals over current passive solar methods. However, this design mostly does not yet include renewable energy use for fan blower operation. The Pioneer Post Harvest Development Group has installed more 350 units since 2012 in Myanmar.
Required Maintenance Technical Level | The technology can be locally maintained through its life cycle but requires tools and moderate training for maintenance due to the use of the internal combustion engine.
Required Infrastructure for Deployment | Medium: Technology development requires uncommon tools, mid-development level supporting technologies and moderately trained personnel. A good network for further deployment already exists. All materials used in operation are relatively common or easily obtained.
Required Resources during manufacture | Steel, cement, rubber, plastics, lubricants;
Required Resources during operation | Fuel and lubricants;
Deployment Level |
Well established regional use; Thousands of Flat Bed Paddy Rice Dryers are in use in various Pacific Rim countries.
Deployment Capability and Potential | This technology can be further deployed. It requires only moderately trained individuals for installation. The potential to reduce post harvest losses is enormous.
Requirements for Deployment | This technology is well developed and can be immediately deployed. It has to be adapted to renewable energy sources.
Relevance for Autonomy and Food Security | The technology does not support autonomy as it requires supporting technology, energy, and services. However, it does contribute to food security as it results in reducing post harvest losses.
Environment Impacts (emissions) | The operation of the small internal combustion engine requires fossile fuels for operation and therefore has CO2 and other related emissions.
Conformity with Bio- Cybernetic System Rules | The technology does not generally conform to all the Bio Cybernetic Rules.
