"Lighting accounts for a significant percentage of electrical energy consumption in households. In a recent press release from the European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC 30/11/09) lighting is reported to be the third largest electricity consumer in EU households. It accounts for 10.8 % of the overall electricity consumption which amounted to 800.72 TWh in the EU residential sector.
On the other hand, savings up to 80 % are achievable by e.g. exchanging incandescent lamps (here: GLS) to compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs). Furthermore, additional savings can be achieved by change of behaviour e. g. by turning lights off if not needed. So, energy efficiency in lighting is – from a technical point of view - a low hanging fruit. In spite of this, it is commonly a challenge to convince households to invest in more efficient lighting."[1]
In consequence of the above mentioned, promotion of energy efficient lighting in households can be a "rewarding challenge" for projects. In order to convince households (as well as for information provision to decision-maker), several approaches have been studied so far, as follows:
- information campaigns,
- CFLs distribution free of charge,
- education programmes for students
- and the application of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) for CO2 reduction by CFLs.
One has to consider the situative conditions in a country which will result in adaptations, new ideas, combinations.
