Fuel Pricing Policies

Local Currency: BND
Exchange Rate: 1.283

Fuel Prices are regulated by the government. Official information regarding fuel pricing are not available on governments websites.

Brunei motor fuel prices are the lowest in South East Asia. Although the price of crude oil as benchmark increased over the last 10 years, pump prices in Brunei de facto remained identically. The total subsidy increased from 50 Million BND in 2004 to 202 Million BND in 2007 (→App.A2).

In 2008, the Brunei Government decided to increase fuel prices for foreign customers (mostly coming from the surrounding Malaysia) to the Commercial Price level (=non-subsidized price, see 2.). The motivation was to reduce the overall subsidies and, in particular, to stop subsidizing the Malayan „fuel-tourism“ that was induced by rising fuel prices in Malaysia in 2008.

On „Energy Day“, May 24th 2010, the Brunei government forced all pump stations to sell fuel at the unsubsidized „Commercial Price“ (for just that day). This initiative was done to give Brunei citizens an impression, of how costly fuel is.
