The unregulated growth contributed to the environmental woes of Nevada. Nevadans will take a hard look at the ecological stresses and make hard decisions about environmental policies.[1]

Plastic Pollution

Plastic is a sturdy material made from petrochemicals (oil) manufactured to last. 33 percent is for single-use and discarded which breaks down into smaller pieces. Americans ditch 30 million tons of plastic a year; 8 percent gets recycled, a small portion gets incinerated, and the rest winds up as litters in dumpsites.[2]

Adverse effects of plastic

Plastics destroy the quality of groundwater. Beneath each landfill is toxic chemicals trickling into groundwater and flowing downstream into lakes and rivers. It is a menace to wildlife. Plastics that end up in areas where animals live trigger a mess, ingestion, and habitat disruption. In the seas, plastic debris outweighs zooplankton, organisms that are vital to the food chain. The substance displaces algae that sea creatures eat absorbing the toxins. Chemicals extracted from plastic runs in our blood and tissues affecting our health and well-being by exposing us to maladies like cancer, birth defects, impaired immunity, and other ailments. The continuous financial damage is immeasurable everything suffers tourism, business, the health of humans and other living creatures, environment, and the earth as a whole.[3]

Initiatives of the Nevada State Government to fight the plastic menace

Collection bins are spread all over Nevada where residents can drop off their waste. These litters are transferred to recycling centers and transformed into usable items. Residents are offered free household hazardous waste collection services for cars, appliances, paint, fluorescent light, medications… and more. The public is continuously informed and given guidelines on the proper disposal of waste.[4]

Pest control

The temperature rises brutally in summer signaling the pest season is on. Most insects hibernate, less active in the winter and thrive with the searing heat. Warm and dry conditions reduced the ability of trees to ward attacks from pests infesting acres of forests in Nevada. Much of the state has sun-bathed deserts which provides the best solar potential in the country. In 2017, Nevada ranked fourth in the U.S.in electricity generation from solar power. Solar panel installation in Las Vegas generated enough renewable energy providing electricity to the public buildings up to the street lamps. It is one of the cities in the world to derive its power from a green source. Las Vegas utilizes every free space to amass energy from the sun to produce renewable energy. Solar panels are installed around the city hall plaza, atop wastewater treatment plans and on rooftops of city-owned buildings. Solar shade canopies are used at city parks to generate more renewable energy.[6]

Tree Preservation

The value of trees has no boundaries we seldom find time to ponder how trees soften the harsh aspects of our environment. Trees are great energy cost savers they provide shade in the summer which means less cost for air-conditioning and when they lose their leaves in winter, they allow sunlight to come in. They add value to a property. Trees improve the quality of the air absorbing carbon and emitting oxygen, they act as filters absorbing pollutants in the air. Habitat for birds and other wildlife. Trees add beauty and peace to the community contributing to the quality of life.
