Energy is central to so many of the SDGs, far from a separate issue that exists in isolation. This is especially true of the net zero transition where clean energy is crucial to realizing our ambitions. This session will explore some of the issues we didn’t see coming when it comes to pursuing net zero, from the human rights issues associated with the critical minerals needed for clean energy (i.e. the human rights abuses reported in the DRC where cobalt is collected, the solar sector in China, as well as neocolonialism) to safety and proliferation of nuclear fission in new nuclear nations and issues of intermittency.
Researchers will talk about how they are responding to these challenges and tackling this complexity across different sectors and locations in practical terms, and show how the research community is working on solutions that are moving us forward.
