Assignment

Under the supervision of the Team Lead Power Sector Transformation, the selected candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day work under the thematic area: Power System Flexibility, primarily on the activities related to (1) developing and disseminating insights from modelling analysis that can inform Member States and Regions on power infrastructure debates related to the energy transition (2) enhancing IRENA’s toolbox and knowledge framework for planning the integration of VRE in power systems (3) provide capacity building and support for countries. More specifically, the selected candidate will contribute to the following tasks:

  • Perform extensive national and regional analysis for Member States using models, including IRENA FlexTool and others, assessing power system flexibility and advising on the feasibility of the future energy systems in Member Countries and focus Regions.
  • Contribute to IRENA’s World and Energy Transitions Outlook reports, based on the results of power system flexibility analyses.
  • Lead the development and maintenance of IRENA’s Power Sector Transformation (PST) team modelling toolkit and knowledge framework.
  • Expand and enhance the team’s existing repository of tools and widgets for energy modelling, data management, analysis and visualisation, by using advanced technologies.
  • Contribute to IRENA’s capacity building activities in the area of IRENA power system modelling tools
  • Ensure close links with relevant programmatic work across the Agency and externally with other organisations to identify synergies in line with the Agency’s priorities;
  • Proactively search for and identify new links and opportunities – both internal and external – to achieve greater impact and outreach of IRENA’s energy and power sector planning analysis;
  • Develop knowledge products on power sector transformation relevant for IRENA Member States
  • Support the Team Lead Power Sector Transformation on the day-to-day operation of the collaborative frameworks lead by the team
  • Perform other duties as required

Qualifications

  • Education: Advanced university degree in energy system analysis, engineering, or related fields. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • Experience/Skills: At minimum of two years of progressively responsible working experience in a relevant energy or climate-related field at national or international level. Analytical skills and expertise in energy data analysis, application and development of energy and power system modelling tools. Prior responsibility in dealing with national and international stakeholders. Established track record of programming and scripting for large quantities of data. Knowledge on PLEXOS and/or IRENA’s planning tools like FlexTool or SPLAT is an advantage.
  • Languages: Excellent command of written and spoken English is a must. Knowledge of other languages would be of additional benefit. Good drafting skills both in technical and non-technical outputs in English
