Abstract
Launched in July 2021, Grids4Africa is a RES4Africa’s programme focused on the development of Africa’s electricity networks as a key factor to achieve universal access to energy and successfully incorporate increasing amounts of intermittent renewables. Conceived and developed in strict collaboration with its grid-expert members, the programme aims at raising awareness and at developing public-private partnerships to bring additional private sector resources.

Context

Electricity grids provide the bedrock of today’s and tomorrow’s power systems, allowing electricity to flow from the point of production to the point of consumption and enabling a host of productive uses across economic sectors. In the context of the global energy transition, as well as the push for progress on the Sustainable Development Goals in the so-called Decade of Action, electricity infrastructure is more important than ever. Nowhere is this more critical than in Africa, a continent with low levels of electricity access and low quality of service even where access is available, standing in stark contrast with the needs of its rapidly growing populations and economies. As such, dedicating time and effort to understanding the challenges and opportunities associated with electricity grids in Africa is essential, particularly within the context of COVID-19 and the opportunities offered by green recovery plans worldwide.

Method

The expertise that RES4Africa has gained over the last 8 years of working with the energy sectors of Africa has led the Foundation to identify a bottleneck in the attention and support given to grid networks in Africa. For this reason, in July 2021 RES4Africa Foundation launched the Grids4Africa programme, aiming at supporting the development of electricity network in the African continent, especially the Sub-Saharan area. Grids4Africa features its own membership group composed of existing RES4Africa Members with grids expertise, as well as other stakeholders with an interest in Africa’s grid development. The main goals of the programme are to raise awareness about the importance of grid infrastructure and the challenges associated with grids in Africa and to support the development of public-private partnerships to bring additional private sector resources to transmission and distribution and boost progress towards sustainable development and energy goals. Leveraging on the expertise of RES4Africa’s members with experience in electricity networks, the Programme aims to: Create a Grids4Africa Coalition to engage local stakeholders and establish open dialogue; Conduct a series of strategic analyses on a range of topics and organise dissemination events to publish the findings; Develop a customised training programme relating to grids.
