Collaborating for Change: Lessons from the SUN-ESDS Project Bringing together private-sector, governments, and organizations for affordable and sustainable energy solutions to communities affected by forced displacement.

Access to safe, affordable, and sustainable energy is key for human development. According to the Global Compact for Refugees (GCR), this can be best achieved when humanitarian and development actors make use of their capacities and complementary advantages. To this end, the BMZ commissioned project, Energy Solutions for Displacement Settings (SUN-ESDS), supports UNHCR technically and strategically on the implementation of its energy strategy 2019-2025. The strategy aims to enable refugees, host communities, and people of concern to meet their energy needs in a safe and sustainable way. SUN-ESDS interventions in refugee areas supported different pillars of this strategy by focusing on improving households’ and social institutions’ energy access via market-based solutions. This was achieved by a) identifying user-friendly and context-specific energy solutions and delivery models, b) engaging private sector partners for reliable and affordable access to energy services, and c) supporting the development of energy policies and plans at national and regional levels.

This event aims to share the lessons learned from project measures implemented in the three pilot countries: Uganda, Kenya, and Ethiopia; providing insights into the challenges and opportunities encountered, while also highlighting the cooperation between UNHCR and GIZ SUN-ESDS during this period.
