The „Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority“ (MERA) regulates any energy prices in Malawi, including liquid fuels. On their internet homepage http://www.meramalawi.mw, there is no information available concerning actual fuel prices and fuel price compositions. According to several internet articles, fuel prices are adjusted several times a year, accounting for the changing import (=world market) prices.
After several fuel shortages in 2009 and 2010, the Malawi Government decided, to found a new, state-owned oil company in 2011. This company should then handle the storage of higher amounts of liquid fuels to avoid fuel shortages in the future (App. A2).
According to an internet article (App. A4), more than 40% of the pump fuel price are levies/taxes. Fuel prices were raised again in January 2011, by 10%.
