Abstract
The Smart Communities Coalition recently published Assessment of Market-Driven Solutions for Energy Access in Refugee Settlements in Sub-Saharan Africa. Authored by a graduate student team at Columbia University and peer-reviewed by Chatham House and Mercy Corps, the white paper analyzes and compares 13 private sector-led energy access projects in refugee settlements in Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda. The paper categorizes projects under three themes – direct grants to suppliers, demand-side interventions and market development activities – and shares learnings and recommendations for practitioners and donors working in displacement settings.
