India Clean Cookstove Forum 2013
Background | Clean Cookstove Forum | Practioner Workshop |
Background
Indoor air pollution (IAP) causes around 480,000 premature deaths annually in India (WHO). The use of improved cookstoves (ICS) can significantly reduce IAP and biomass consumption with its negative effects on health and environment. However, adoption of these stoves has so far been low. This is due to a non-functioning market for improved stoves: On the one hand there is no significant demand, and, on the other hand, the supply of appropriate technologies is insufficient, while the overall market ecosystem is not favorable.
The “Indo-German Energy Programme - Renewable Energy Component” (IGEN-RE) is a bilateral technical cooperation between the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India, implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). The project aims at strengthening the clean cooking sector through a combination of activities on different levels involving all relevant stakeholders such as government institutions, NGOs, and the private sector.
This forum aims at identifying potential solutions to the most significant challenges hindering a large-scale adoption of ICS and at showing us the way for combined future efforts. Furthermore, actors with long-term experience in the field of clean cooking will provide inputs on best practices and lessons learned. In this forum participants will develop a better understanding of the way towards a functioning market for improved cookstoves. This will help them to coordinate more effectively and decide about activities in a well-informed manner.
