Reducing wood consumption by using improved fireplaces at Ina high school

Ina High School in northern Benin is one of the country's 25 technical vocational schools. It has a school canteen for around 319 students. Three meals are provided per day, and until recently, the school used around 5.5 t of wood per month to cook the meals, representing a high cost for the administration. In addition, the traditional fireplaces produced a lot of smoke, making the women cooks ill.

In June 2021, a company supported by EnDev through financial incentives installed AFs at the high school. All those involved at the high school note a big difference compared with traditional fireplaces.

"These improved fireplaces make our lives easier. There's no more smoke like before, and we don't get sick as often. What's more, the meals cook more quickly and we get home to our children more quickly," says Mrs Soule Fati, the school cook. The administration also testified that the amount of wood consumed has been reduced to 1.1 t per month, and with it the related expenses.
