The session is focused on understanding and devising how electric cooking may help street food vendors grow their businesses, which should ultimately lead to a better experience for customers, and what role DISCOM, legislation, research groups, and the government can play in this endeavour. Some of the DISCOMs like CESC are already taking the initiative to provide direct formal connections to street food vendors, which is a win-win situation for both as DISCOMs are able to increase their revenue while vendors have a secure and permanent electricity connection. Such an arrangement could enhance street vendor’s livelihood, business growth, and customer satisfaction. India is also working on a state-level Energy Action Plan (EAP), and besides improving energy efficiency, the use of modern energy for cooking should also be given priority in EAP as energy is a state matter in India.
Typical street vendors in India, have an annual turnover of $13,000 and $130,000 (INR 10 lakhs to INR 1 crore) and commonly provide jobs for 1-5 workers. Improving access to and use of modern energy by street vendors has the potential to uplift the street vendor's income to a sustainable level, grow the client base or product or service range, and improve profitability."Worldwide, India" is not in the list (Worldwide, Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, Andorra, Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Armenia, Australia, ...) of allowed values for the "Country" property.
