Eligibility/Description
ACMI is not a commercial initiative and does not endorse or assess any projects, products, companies, organizations, or credits that may be included in its catalog, nor does ACMI act as a broker in respect of any products, services, or transactions. ACMI retains absolute discretion as to the inclusion of any project or organization in its catalog. Applicants should carefully review the ACMI Terms of Service and Privacy Policy prior to submitting this application.

ACMI builds on, supplements, and reinforces ongoing efforts aimed at scaling voluntary carbon markets in Africa and does not compete with any existing initiative.

ACMI represents the broader voluntary carbon market ecosystem, not individual organizations. Its sponsors, partners, and steering committee members agree to disclose any potential direct benefits and recuse themselves from any efforts that could directly benefit themselves or their organizations.

Overview of the Africa Carbon Markets Initiative (ACMI) The African Carbon Markets Initiative (ACMI) is a collaborative initiative supported by Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL), the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), and The Rockefeller Foundation, in conjunction with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the UN Climate Change High-Level Champions. ACMI is led by a steering committee of African leaders, CEOs, and carbon markets experts.

Launched at COP27, ACMI is intended to be a forum for parties to discuss and identify opportunities and areas of potential collaboration for mobilizing climate finance in Africa through voluntary carbon markets, which have the potential to reduce emissions and remove CO2e from the atmosphere, driving on-the-ground climate impact, and also offer an immense opportunity to drive development priorities such as expanding energy access, improving health through clean cooking, creating jobs and ultimately contributing to poverty alleviation by encouraging development and implementation of projects targeted towards clean energy generation and efficient resource use.

ACMI published a Roadmap Report in November 2022, proposing 13 Action programs to support the development of African VCMs, and laying out ambitions for the continent:

· Grow African carbon credits retirements ~19-fold from ~16 MtCO2e retired in 2020 to ~300 MtCO2e per annum by 2030 and up to 1.5-2.5 GtCO2e by 2050; · Create or support 30 million jobs by 2030 and more than 100 million jobs by 2050 through carbon projects development, execution, certification, and monitoring; · Raise the quality and integrity of African credits to mobilize up to US$6 billion by 2030 and more than US$100 billion per annum by 2050; · Ensure equitable and transparent distribution of carbon credit revenue, with a significant portion of revenue going to local communities.
