Background

In 2021, a group of feminist civil society activists working to achieve global climate and economic justice came together in an “action nexus,” formed across two Action Coalitions of the Generation Equality Forum. This group is led by four key partners, who also serve as civil society co-leads of the Action Coalitions on economic justice and climate justice, and hosts a listserv of allied feminist, climate, and economic justice organizations interested in building advocacy at this intersection.

Known as the Feminist Action Nexus for Economic and Climate Justice, this informal coalition is guided by the objectives, principles, and key demands drawn from the Feminist Blueprint for Economic Justice published in 2021, as well as from the feminist systemic analysis that shapes our broader movement(s). The Action Nexus seeks to foment connections across movements, to expand and amplify our collective understanding of the “poly-crisis” and the structures of power that have created it. We have spent most of our first two years addressing this objective, and now seek simultaneously to contribute to a vision for accountability for those systems and actors in which global asymmetries are entrenched. Acknowledging the vast expanse between the vision outlined in our framework and the current state of our world, the Action Nexus seeks to begin by highlighting a baseline and (where possible) trends, according to each of the seven dimensions of our Key Demands.

Overview of Project The Action Nexus seeks to publish a snapshot of trends, case studies, and a brief analysis of the major elements of our feminist vision for economic and climate justice. Covering tax, debt, trade, global economic governance, and climate finance, this “Trends Report” will present feminist perspectives on the current status - via a selection of key examples of trends either/ both positively contributing to or detracting from our collective vision- and the potential trajectory for these critical areas. The report will amplify local and global sites of struggle against corporate capture of multilateralism, continued colonial exploitation of the global South/majority world, and the entrenchment of fossil fuel capitalism. This publication seeks to present a dynamic and movement-facing synopsis of where we are now, including examples of best practices, and where we need to go next as steps towards achieving a feminist vision of structural justice. Intended as a feminist “state of the field,” the report will outline a baseline systemic analysis from which collective work can advance the vision of the Feminist Blueprint for economic and climate justice.

The final report should be no more than ten pages. It will be published in English, French, and Spanish, potentially in an interactive online format with links to the resources and case studies in the report. The final report will also be launched alongside communications outputs, including digital and traditional media components, on which the WEDO communications team will lead.

The hiring timeline is envisioned as follows:
