This document explores experiences of promoting PEU in MHPs in six countries in the South and South East Asia region, viz. India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines and Nepal. The MHP sector in these countries are at various stages of development – some starting to take off while others have moved ahead in terms of number of installations and development of policy and institutional framework. The socio-economic, cultural and political situations are diverse. The promotion of PEU is also varied accordingly. As such, taken together, the study of selected cases from these countries provides varied pictures of progress and laggings as well as diverse possibilities.
This document basically draws on experiences on PEU promotion in MHPs summarized in the six comprehensive reports from the mentioned countries. The aspects explored include policy and institutional framework for MHP and PEU promotion, approaches of PEU promotion, factors affecting success of PEU promotion, and impact of PEU promotion on sustainability of MHPs. The document has also tried to highlight some gender perspective of PEU promotion. It finally synthesize the lessons learnt from the country experiences.
