Abstract

The transformation of the energy system from fossil to renewable sources is driven primarily by enhanced energy security and climate change mitigation. Biomass must play a pivotal role in this transition to a low-carbon economy.

Worldwide, biomass (including putrescible waste and bio-waste) accounts for over two-thirds of all renewable energy supplies. Biogas, in particular, is an interesting option with significant potential to reduce the dependence on natural gas and other fossil fuels. Currently, the biogas production industry is experiencing rapid growth. Although a significant number of biogas plants are already in operation in some countries, there is still huge potential for development worldwide.

WBA factsheets present an unbiased overview of bioenergy technologies and are a guiding tool for policy makers, researchers and companies. The objective of drafting and publishing factsheets is to bring rational arguments in the public discussion and to support the development of bioenergy.
