Abstract
Energy efficiency and conservation are the key pillars of sustainable development around the world. The same has been acknowledged by Rwanda, and the country has placed energy efficiency as one of the priority areas of improvement in its efforts to enhance the quality of life of its citizens. Improving energy efficiency increases energy security, reduces the expenditure of foreign currency reserves on energy imports, reduces the burden on national grid during peak hours, and at the same time limits the emissions. The electricity supply chain in Rwanda represents clear opportunities for energy efficiency. The resources used to fuel the existing power plants are limited and so their use must be optimized. Additionally, a significant amount of electricity is lost during transmission and distribution. Also, consumption of electricity unlocks visible options for energy efficiency (EE) activities in Rwanda. It is, therefore, imperative that EE is considered as a key factor in Rwanda across the electricity supply chain. Increasing resource and transmission efficiencies and reducing unnecessary consumption through various technological interventions will benefit the environment, sector, citizens, and business. This study analyzes the present EE scenario in Rwanda and taking cue from international best experience, secondary research, and stakeholder consultation, identifies gaps and offers solutions for the improvement of different sides of EE in Rwanda.
