Abstract
Nigeria’s active engagement in global climate diplomacy dates back to 1994 when it became a Party to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (FCCC). The spans include its ratification of the Kyoto Protocol in 2004 and the submission of its First National Communication (FNC) to the UNFCCC in 2003 and Second National Communication in February 2014; two years after, the Nigeria Climate Change Policy Response and Strategy was approved by the Federal Executive Council in September 2012 (NDC, 2015). In the context of the Paris Agreement in 2015, Nigeria ratified its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) in 2016 with a commitment to reducing its GHG emissions by 20 %; unconditionally; and 45% conditionally. Nigeria’s key priority sectors as outlined in its NDC for climate change mitigation are Energy, Agriculture and Land Use, Transport and Industries while the priority sectors for climate change adaptation are Health, Environment, Disaster Risk Management, Water, Forestry, Agriculture, Energy and Transport.
