The Mini-grids Partnership (MGP) is a consortium of over 300 mini-grid stakeholders that works to accelerate the development and deployment of clean energy mini-grids by enhancing and complementing each other's work through collaboration and coordination. The Mini-Grids Partnership is a voluntary partnership of leading mini-grid stakeholders - from both the public and private sector - that seeks to accelerate the development and deployment of clean energy mini-grids by exchanging information and ideas and shaping policy and markets to unlock the potential of widespread mini-grid electrification.

The Mini-Grids Partnership was founded in 2014 under the auspices of SEforALL. The Partnership's operations are co-led by its Secretariat at SEforALL and the Alliance for Rural Electrification. The Partnership is governed by a Steering Committee with representation from funders/financiers, government, industry, and other enablers. The Committee includes African Development Bank, Africa Minigrid Developers Association (AMDA), Alliance for Rural Electrification (ARE), CLUB-ER, FCDO, GET.invest, GIZ, International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Power for All, the Rockefeller Foundation, SEforALL, SNV and the World Bank. The Steering Committee is responsible for providing strategic guidance and oversight to the Partnership's operations.

The Mini-Grids Partnership's goal is to reduce the barriers in the mini-grid sector and thereby create a more mature and thriving clean energy mini-grids sector. To help achieve its goal, the MG's strategic objectives were defined to:

  • Champion the sector and help shape policy for public and private sector mini-grid development
  • Coordinate sector knowledge and action
  • Broker partnerships
  • Support finance and de-risking mechanisms, business models and opportunities
  • Promote international standards and quality assurance frameworks

The main activities of the MGP are:

  • Communications and information dissemination through our industry newsletter and social media,
  • Organizing events and meetings (Steering Committee meetings, MGP related webinars, larger meetings for the MGP members),
  • Organizing thematic Working Group meetings for the MGP members,
  • Leading the work on commissioning the State of the Global Mini-grids Market Report and its updates.

With less than 10 years left to achieve SDG7, it is critical for the mini-grid market to reach scale and realize its potential as a least-cost solution for delivery of electricity in many areas. Despite the important role that mini-grids can play to help close the electricity access gap, the sector still faces challenges and barriers in many countries, among others on the policy and regulations front, lack of proven business models, lack of affordable long-term financing.

To address these barriers, the sector needs to create greater collaboration and coordination amongst the various stakeholders including funders/financiers, governments, industry/private sector, and other enablers. The MGP aims to create a thriving global mini-grids sector to help achieve SDG7 by using the collective experience of its members.
