Hydro-powered Water Pump: The Barsha Pump

aQysta’s Barsha pump is a hydro-powered irrigation pump that uses the kinetic energy of rivers and canals to pump water, without requiring any other external sources of energy such as fossil fuel or electricity. It operates at zero operating cost and doesn't emit any greenhouse gas. The Barsha pump is designed based on the proven working principle of the spiral pump.[1]

In 24 hours, the Barsha pump can pump up to 40,000 liters of water. It can lift the water to the vertical height of 20 meters or horizontally, it can pump to a distance of 2 km with a maximum flow rate of 1 liter per second. It can be used as a stand-alone unit to pump water to the field or can be combined with other complementary technologies such as drip irrigation. Another major benefit of the technology is that it can be implemented without requiring existing or additional infrastructure, as long as flowing water is present.

No requirement of any fuel/electricity, thus no harmful emissions, and no operating costs in the operation of the pump, are the major advantages of the technology, which not only contributes to the health and finances of the farmers but also to the efforts in preventing environmental degradation. 

Barsha pump was developed by a high-tech start-up called aQysta[2], which aims of being a global leader in hydro-power pumping solution. The company was founded by three engineers from the Delft University of Technology (The Netherlands) who are motivated to create an impact in people’s lives through appropriately implemented technologies. Today, aQysta operates from 6 different countries, consisting of an international team of 30 members, who share the same goal: to innovate and deploy technological solutions in a self-sustainable way to make socioeconomic prosperity accessible and affordable to people in developing countries.
