Welcome to the Green People's Energy Knowledge Hub

Germany's initiative Green People’s Energy  was launched by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in 2017. The initiative has been implemented as Grüne Bürgerenergie (GBE, or Green People's Energy) by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) since 2019. It works to facilitate, expand and secure supply of and access to sustainable energy in rural Africa. It relies on the broad participation of small and medium-sized enterprises, municipalities, cooperatives, public associations and citizens.

The programme runs activities to improve conditions for:

  • Productive use of renewable energy
  • Financing renewable energy projects
  • Gender parity in the energy sector
  • Community-based approaches to ensuring energy access
  • Mini-grids as a stepping stone to the global energy transition
  • Skills development for sustaining technology in remote areas

The energypedia GBE Knowledge Hub presents studies, case studies, project descriptions, publications and knowledge and expertise accumulated during the programme runtime:

  • Knowledge products compile research from case studies into compendiums on the four topics productive use, gender, financing and skills
  • Case studies are impact reports from selected programme activities in its nine focus countries Benin, Côte d'Ivoire, Ethiopia, Ghana, Mozambique, Namibia, Senegal, Uganda and Zambia
  • Other studies and reports include various research papers commissioned as part of the programme activities
  • All projects include all of the exposes of the projects run by the Small Projects Fund
